Department of Microbiology

The Department of Microbiology was established in the academic year 2002-2003, with more than 5000 sq. ft. of laboratory facility. The department comprises all the essential equipment and provides a holistic atmosphere for the students to work around. The facility encompasses Fermenter, HPLC, GC-FID, Walk-in Cold Room, Walk-in Hot Room, Multi ELISA Reader, Free Drier, Phase Contrast Microscope, Shaker Incubator, PCR, Agarose Gel Electrophoresis and SDS-PAGE Electrophoresis.The department possesses excellent library facilities, which includes latest editions of Books, National/International Journals and Magazines covering all fields of Microbiology i.e., Bacteriology, Virology, Microbial Physiology, Microbial Genetics, Mycology, Parasitology, Immunology, Industrial Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology etc.

The department offers B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. research programs. The department is equipped with well-qualified, dedicated and experienced faculty members.The faculty members are regularly updating their knowledge by attending online and offline Faculty Development Programme (FDP) through SWAYAM, and Faculty Immersion Programme (FIP). The department has received six major research grants from various funding agencies such as UGC, ICMR, DBT, DST and TNSCST for research work since the inception of the department and received 1.14 crore as research grant. The salient findings of the research activities of the department are regularly being published in Web of Science and Scopus indexed journals and presented in international and national conferences and other scientific meets.

The publications are widely cited and fetched good h-index. Further, 10 patents have been granted and 35 gene sequences have so far been submitted. The department is regularly organizing conferences, seminars, workshops/skill development programs, guest lectures, exhibitions and competitions. It is conducting Value Added Courses (VAC) like Mushroom Cultivation, Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biofertilizers etc. Thus, students can get placed in both private and government sectors.The goal of our department is to promote quality and value-based education by motivating the practical skills of students and creating awareness on the recent advances in Microbiology which will make each student as a renovator to seek remedy for the future with a mission and vision.

I am privileged to welcome you to the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Arts, Science, Commerce and Management. Our department has been keen at imparting quality education and research since establishment in 2002. The department offers regular degree programmes, encompassing 3-year B.Sc. Microbiology, 4 Year B.Sc. Microbiology (B.Sc. Hons. with Research) and B.Sc. Microbiology (B.Sc. Hons.), and M. Sc. Microbiology and Ph.D. Microbiology (FT and PT). The department is now fostering more than 200 students and research scholars who are guided by 9 qualified faculty members, supported by two technical assistants. Our faculty members are dynamically involved in pioneering research in the core areas of Microbiology.

Association

  • MICROINNOVATA is the association of the Department of Microbiology. In the year 2025, the association was inaugurated with an insightful and thought-provoking guest lecture on the topic “Microbiology – Beyond Classrooms and Laboratories”.

Achievements /Awards

  • The students of the department visited countries like Taiwan and Poland for the Internship and Student Exchange program.
  • Best student project under Student Projects Scheme (2023 – 2024) was awarded by Tamil Nādu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST), Chennai.

Exhibition

  • The Department of Microbiology organized an exhibition titled “Microworld: Unveiling the Invisible” on September
    18, 2025, to commemorate International Microorganisms Day. By aligning with the United Nations Sustainable
    Development Goal (SDG) 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), the event highlighted the importance of microorganisms in
    disease prevention, treatment, environmental sustainability, and the development of innovative healthcare
    solutions.

Extension activity

  • The Department organised an awareness camp in connection with World Hepatitis Day, celebrated on July 28th 2025
    in an adopted village in Coimbatore (T.N.), India. The event aimed at raising global awareness about viral
    hepatitis, a group of infectious diseases that cause liver inflammation.
