The Department of Commerce was established during the year 1995. At present, Department of Commerce offers two under-graduate programmes, one PG and one Ph.D. Research Programme. The curriculum and syllabi are constantly updated in align with UGC regulations and to meet the global demands.

PROGRAMME: SEMINAR
Date: 19.06.2025

The Department of Commerce, Faculty of Arts, Science, Commerce & Management, Karpagam Academy of Higher Education organized a seminar on “IPR in Academia – From Research to Commercialization” on 19th June 2025 at Room V208. The session began with a welcome address by Dr. S. Jegadeeswari, Assistant Professor of Commerce. Dr. S. Karthik, Associate Professor, Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education, served as the resource person. He provided deep insights into the fundamentals and types of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), the role of IPR in research, and the processes involved in patent filing, IP management, and commercialization of academic inventions.

The seminar emphasized the importance of innovation, technology transfer, and government policies that support academic startups and patent filing. Real-life case studies made the session interactive and practical. A total of 79 students and 13 staff members actively participated, engaging in a lively Q&A session on topics such as IP ownership and startup support. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. V. Mathankumar, acknowledging the contributions of the speaker, participants, and organizing team.

PROGRAMME: SPECIAL LECTURE SERIES
Date: 28.06.2025

The Department of Commerce, Karpagam Academy of Higher Education, organized a Special Lecture Series on “Recent Reforms in GST” on 28th June 2025. The event began with a warm welcome address by Dr. R. Velmurugan, Professor and Programme Coordinator, who highlighted the importance of keeping abreast of the evolving Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms, given their significant impact on commerce and trade. The session was conducted by the distinguished resource person, Dr. P. Rajan, Deputy General Manager (Finance), NLC India Limited, who delivered an insightful lecture on the latest updates in the GST regime.

Dr. Rajan elaborated on the unified GST tax structure and recent government reforms aimed at simplifying compliance and enhancing transparency. He explained critical developments such as the rationalization of GST rates, phased implementation of e-invoicing, tightening of Input Tax Credit (ITC) mechanisms, and the introduction of simplified return filing processes. The resource person also discussed relevant judicial pronouncements and GST Council decisions, enriching the session with practical examples. The lecture saw active participation from 38 faculty members of the Commerce Department, who engaged in a fruitful interactive session on GST challenges and digital compliance tools. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. V. Mathankumar, expressing gratitude to the resource person, management, faculty, and attendees for their valuable contributions. The session proved to be a highly informative and timely academic engagement for all participants.

The Department of Commerce, Karpagam Academy of Higher Education, organized a seminar on Social Entrepreneurship on 2nd July 2025, attended by 63 faculty members and students. The session commenced with a welcome address by Dr. R. Velmurugan, Professor and Programme Coordinator, who highlighted the significance of social entrepreneurship in addressing societal challenges through innovative business solutions. The seminar was led by Dr. G. Raju, Senior Professor, University of Kerala, who explained how social entrepreneurs combine profit-making with social value creation to solve issues like poverty, education, healthcare, and environmental protection.

Dr. Raju emphasized the differences between traditional and social entrepreneurship, providing examples of successful social enterprises such as SELCO India and Grameen Bank. Key topics included funding sources like grants, donations, and impact investments, financial sustainability, and overcoming challenges such as funding shortages and market competition. The role of government, NGOs, and academic institutions in supporting social entrepreneurship was also discussed. The interactive Q&A session saw enthusiastic participation from attendees. The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. V. Mathan Kumar, who encouraged students to harness entrepreneurship for positive social impact.

The Department of Commerce, Karpagam Academy of Higher Education, conducted a two-day workshop on “Role of Artificial Intelligence in Investment Strategies” on 3rd and 4th July 2025. The workshop aimed to introduce students to how AI is changing the way investments are made. The event started with a welcome speech by Dr. S. Jagadeeswari, who spoke about the growing importance of AI in finance.

The sessions were led by Dr. S. Vanitha, an expert and certified trainer from SEBI and NISM. She explained how AI uses data and algorithms to help investors make better decisions, unlike traditional investing that relies on human judgment. The workshop covered real examples like robo-advisors and AI investment apps. Challenges such as data privacy and ethics were also discussed. Around 41 students participated actively, asking questions and showing keen interest in careers in financial technology. The workshop ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. V. Mathan Kumar, encouraging students to explore new technology in commerce. Overall, the event was informative and inspiring for all attendees.

The Department of Commerce, Karpagam Academy of Higher Education, conducted a two-day workshop on “Mastering Financial Literacy – Empowering Students with Key Skills” on 9th and 10th July 2025. The workshop focused on practical financial skills like budgeting, saving, investing, debt management, and long-term financial planning. The event began with a welcome address by Ms. V. Haripriya, who emphasized the importance of financial literacy for students today.

The sessions were led by Dr. S. Balusamy, an experienced Securities Market Trainer with SEBI and NISM. Dr. Balusamy explained key financial concepts including the differences between money and share markets, various investment options, and the role of digital tools in making smart financial decisions. He also highlighted investor protection and regulations by SEBI. Students actively participated, asking questions about investments and career opportunities. The workshop ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. V. Mathan Kumar, encouraging students to apply the financial knowledge in their lives for a secure future.

The event started with a welcome speech by Dr. R. Velmurugan, who spoke about how financial inclusion helps reduce poverty and supports economic growth. The lecture was delivered by Dr. R. Ganapathi, Associate Professor from Alagappa University, who explained key concepts of financial inclusion, the role of Microfinance, Self-Help Groups, FinTech, and government schemes like Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. He also highlighted the challenges such as lack of infrastructure and awareness, and suggested ways to overcome them. The session ended with an interactive Q&A and a vote of thanks by Dr. V. Radha from Jain University, Bangalore. She explained key concepts like vision setting, innovation, risk assessment, and tools such as SWOT and PESTLE analysis. Real-life examples and case studies were shared to help participants understand how strategic thinking supports growth and competitive advantage. Prabakaran, Director of Edufy Technology, Coimbatore. The session opened with a welcome by Dr. R. Velmurugan, who stressed the importance of keeping up with changing job markets and financial literacy for commerce students. Dr. Prabakaran shared valuable insights on emerging career fields like FinTech, digital banking, data analytics, investment advisory, and entrepreneurship. He encouraged students to pursue certifications such as CFA, CMA, and CPA to improve their employability. The lecture also covered key personal finance topics including budgeting, credit management, stock market basics, and setting financial goals early for a secure future.

The session was highly interactive, with students engaging in discussions about career planning, resume building, interview preparation, and adapting to technological advances such as AI and automation in finance. Dr. Prabakaran’s real-world examples and industry experience made the talk relatable and motivating. The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. V. PROGRAMME: TRADE FAIR
Date: 13-08-2025 & 14-08-2025

The Department of Commerce at Karpagam Academy of Higher Education hosted a vibrant two-day Trade Fair on 13th and 14th August 2025 to inspire entrepreneurship and creativity among students. The event began with a lamp lighting ceremony by Dr. V. Ragavi and Vice Chancellor Dr. S. Ravi, who emphasized the importance of building confidence and leadership through practical business exposure. Dr. R. Velmurugan highlighted how the fair connects academic learning with real-world trade skills.

Fifty student-run stalls showcased a variety of products, from crafts to food and garments, attracting over 600 participants who actively engaged as organizers and visitors. Guided by faculty members, the fair promoted teamwork, communication, and leadership. Dr. V. Mathan Kumar concluded the event with appreciation, celebrating the fair as a successful platform for innovation and practical learning, empowering students to embark on their entrepreneurial journeys with confidence.
